Harrow School Online pupils studying Maths and Further Maths have enjoyed great success in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge this year. This is a very challenging exam which stretches pupils’ problem solving skills to the limits, challenging their mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. We were delighted to see such positive engagement and enjoyment from the pupils in the face of such challenge, and it is a joy to see such strong results, with over 70% of the pupils achieving a certificate at the Bronze level or above.
Particular praise must go to two of our pupils in the Lower Sixth, Hallie and Will, who each scored a Gold certificate, and have qualified for the Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo exam.
Upper Sixth pupil, Gonçalo, has taken the prize for the highest score in the school, however, with a sufficiently high score to qualify for the first round of the British Mathematical Olympiad; this means that Gonçalo ranks amongst the top 1000 scorers across the country. This is truly remarkable achievement, and we are very excited to see how he gets on in this gruelling three-and-a-half hour exam next week.
Laurie Phippard, Head of Mathematics said “As a school, we are incredibly proud of the success that our pupils have achieved in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge this year and wish the best of luck to Hallie, Will and Gonçalo in the follow-up rounds.”
